Death Claims Mrs. Duncan - Services Scheduled Saturday Morning

Mrs. Carolyn Goff Duncan, 82, of 4 Mentelle Park, member of a pioneer Kentucky family and widow of a former mayor of Lexington, died at 3:20 p.m. yesterday at her home following a long illness.

Mrs. Duncan, widow of Henry T. Duncan, who was elected mayor here in 1893, was a sister of the late Sudduth Goff, New York portrait painter.

Mrs. Duncan, a talented musician, was a regular member of the White House guest list for music teas given by Mrs Woodrow Wilson.

While in Washington, she was a soloist at the inauguration of President William Howard Taft, and at the night of the opening of the DAR Hall in Washington she was guest soloist. William Jennings Bryan was the speaker at the opening.

Mrs. Duncan attended Chevy Chase Seminary in Washington, serving as assistant chaperone while there, and also was soloist for several years at a Lutheran Church in the capital.

She studied under Thomas Evans Green, whose wife was concert master at the White House.

Earlier, she attended Hamilton College and Transylvania College here.

She was married to Mr. Duncan March 12, 1914, and a short time later they moved to her present home on Mentelle Park.

Mrs. Duncan was a native of Clark County, a daughter of the late Thomas and Mary Sudduth Goff.

Her family moved to Eminence so that her older sister, Anna Chandler Goff, could study music. Miss Goff later attended the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and Boston College of Music and for many years was a leader in music circles here.

Mrs. Duncan went to Tucson, Ariz., in 1925 for her health, and lived there 10 years before returning to Lexington.

She had been a member of Christ Episcopal Church since her marriage.

Survivors include a son, John Allen Duncan, Lexington; a daughter, Mrs. Lucien D. Hertert, San Francisco, and 12 grandchildren.

The body was taken to the W.R. Milward Mortuary-Broadway, where friends may call after noon today.

Services will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Christ Church by the Rev. Thomas A. Roberts. Burial will be in the Lexington Cemetery.
