Elias Harrison James was born September 29, 1840 in West Carlisle, Coshocton County, Ohio to William Scott James (1804-1850) of Loudoun County, Virginia and Sarah Bagley (1810-1879). On August 14, 1862, Elias enlisted in Company "I" of the 36th Ohio Volunteer Infantry (O.V.I.) at Millfield, Ohio and was sent directly to the front, his regiment being placed on provost duty at the second Battle of Bull Run in Virginia (August 28-30, 1862). Elias was also actively engaged in the Battles of South Mountain (September 14, 1862); Antietam, Maryland (September 17, 1862); Chickamauga, Georgia (September 19-20, 1863); and, Mission Ridge, Tennessee (November 25, 1863). By the conclusion of the Civil War, Elias had attained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. On August 24, 1864, Elias married Emma Fuller (1846-1923), daughter of Russell Nash Fuller (1817-1899) and Eliza Buckingham Cooley (1820-1903). Following the war, Elias was a shoe merchant in Findlay, Ohio, but owing to ill health, sold his business prior to 1892. Elias died October 11, 1929 in Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio and is buried at Union Cemetery in Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio. He and Emma had no children.
