Edward was of French-Canadian origin. He was the first of 9 children born to Edward Besse, Sr. and Philomene Poitras who migrated to Illinois from Quebec before the Civil War. His father Edward Sr. served for one year in an Illinois Infantry unit at the end of the war. In 1878, Edward Besse, Sr. along with brothers Thomas and David moved from Illinois to near Alma, Ellis County, Texas." per William Gorman (#47658044)
