3 Hudson Youngsters Killed In Michigan

Three grandchildren of a Sheboygan woman - Mrs. Evelyn Newcomet - were among seven people killed in a grinding two-car crash Monday evening in extreme southwestern Michigan.

The victims, only children of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Hudson, Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich., a suburb of Detroit were:
Sara L., 7, Phair N., 9, and Christian S., 4.

Also killed in the same auto were Mrs. Marcia H. Sims, 34, Chicago, and her two children, Leslie, 3, and Stephen, 8, and Ann Clark, 18, also of Chicago.

Mrs. Hudson is the former Patricia Newcomet. Her mother, widow of the late W. W. Newcomet, a former official of the Reiss Steamship Co., lives at 315 Bell Ave. Another Newcomet daughter is Mrs. Rex (Evelyn) Spiller of 3327 N. 6th St. She left for Michigan today.

Struck From Rear
The fatal crash occurred about 7:30 p.m. about 7 miles north of New Buffalo in Berrien County, Michigan.
Berrien County authorities said all seven were riding in a car driven by Mrs. Sims, which pulled onto the Red Arrow Highway just south of the Village of Lakeside, an exclusive area of summer homes, when it was hit in the rear by an auto operated by Robert D. Watkins, 26, Lakeside.

The small foreign convertible in which the Sims, Hudsons, and Miss Clark were riding turned over, hit a guard rail and rolled over a number of times in a shallow ravine.
All of the occupants were thrown out of the car.
Three were dead on arrival at Memorial Hospital in Michigan City, Ind., and the others died a short time later.

Watkins was listed in far condition at the hospital, where he is undergoing treatment for a scalp laceration and chest injuries.

Charges Pending
Witnesses told police that Watkins was traveling at a high rate of speed when the mishap occurred.
Officials were conferring with the Berrien County district attorney's office on the possibility of filing charges of manslaughter against him.

"There were nearly two hours of daylight left at the time of the accident," an investigating officer told The Press today.

The Sims have a summer house in Lakeside, and the Hudson family was vacationing with them at the time of the fatal crash.

Miss Clark, a native of England, was the Sims' childrens' governess.
