James William York was born in Jackson County, Arkansas, and was the only son of Mary E Akin and Felix W York. Mary died when James William, or "Willie" as he was then known, was about two years old. When he was five, Felix was killed in war, and the orphaned boy was raised by Felix's brother William Carroll York and his wife, Martha Catherine Stegall, who brought him from Arkansas to Texas when they came here.

James William first married Carrie Smith in 1882. They were the parents of three children: Felix Thomas, Mary Emma, and Florence "Minnie".

In 1895, James William married Kate Holden, who was a niece to Martha Catherine Stegall York. Although they were not related to each other, they had two cousins in common, the sons of William and Martha.

James William and Kate were the parents of five children: William Presley, Harley Martin Leroy, Katherine Margaret, Daniel Carroll, and James Weaver.
