He is the son of Colonel Levin Brown (born in Twiggs County, Georgia March 15, 1797)who died in 1838 in Jackson County Florida during the Seminole Wars. James' mother Mary Hodges Brown is buried in the Koran Cemetery as well. She lived with James after Levin was killed.

His grave was destroyed by vandals. His mother Mary Hodges Brown (1797-1857) is buried here along with his son Richard E. M. Brown (1852-1857).
