Martha Ellen Rowe was born on June 22, 1840 in Greencastle, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, the third child (out of eight) of John Rowe, Jr. and Elizabeth Watson Prather Rowe. She married Lewis Henry Fletcher on June 5, 1861, right before her 21st birthday, in Greencastle. Her brother, D. Watson Rowe (the Civil War officer and judge) married her husband's sister, Annie Fletcher, the next year. She gave birth to ten children, nine of whom lived to adulthood -- the formidable and popular Fletcher clan. She died on March 9, 1896 at age 55. She is buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Greencastle, in the Fletcher mausoleum.

This is her obituary from the newspaper, from the Valley Spirit (Chambersburg), March 11, 1896:

Mrs. L. H. Fletcher died suddenly at her home in Greencastle Monday morning. She had been ill with pneumonia for about a week but Sunday seemed better. She was the wile of L. H. Fletcher, of the C. V. R. R. auditor's office, and a sister of Hon. D. W. Rowe and Mrs. W. U. Brewer, this place. She was a member of the Presbyterian church, active in all its branches; was known by everybody in Greencastle and loved by all because of her gentleness and her uniform courtesy. She was prominent in society. These children survive Mrs. Fletcher: Mrs. Funk Martin, Florida; Mrs. Pitt F. Carl, Greencastle; Florence, at home; Rowe Fletcher, Harrisburg; H. P. Fletcher, Esq., Chambersburg; J. Gilmore Fletcher, Dayton, O.; Fred. Fletcher, a student of the Chambersburg academy: Watson Fletcher, at home. Mrs. Fletcher was about 55 years old.
