John married Emma Pearl Bigham, daughter of Nancy Ann (Linville) and Samuel Franklin Bigham, on June 23, 1909. He had lived most of his life in Wyandotte County. He retired in 1940 as owner of the former Bridges Creamery, which he operated for 25 years.

He was a member of the old Western Highlands United Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the Kaw Masonic Lodge, Wyandotte Chapter No. 16, Royal Arch Masons, Wyandotte County No. 5, Royal and Select Masons, Ivanhoe Commandery No. 21, Knights Templar, Scottish Rite Bodies, Scottish Rite Fourscore Club, White Shrine of Jerusalem and a past patron of Mendias Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star.
