Katherine was a daughter of Andreas and Katharine (Dinkel) Windholz. She was born near the Volga River in Herzog, Russia in 1872.

On October 21, 1890 she married Alexander B. Brungardt. They had 14 children. Three of their four first-born children died before reaching two and half years old. They were Michael, Anthony and Adolph. Catherine, b. 1893, became Sister Frederica. In January 1899 their fifth child, a son named Adolph, was born. Following Adolph came Balthazar 'Bill', Mary Helen, Anna Matilda 'Tillie', Leoba Felicitas 'Lee', Ida Mae, Fredoline 'Fred', Joseph E., Daniel A., and Alexia 'Lex'. All survived well into adulthood.

After Katherine's husband Alexander died suddenly in 1916 she raised her children with the help of extended family members. During her advanced age she lived a few months with each of her children, giving grandchildren and grandma the opportunity to know each other and bond.

She died in the Concordia Hospital where her daughter, a nun, was administrator.
