William along with his brother Lambert Jr. operated the Van Laak Broom Manufacturing Co., which was started by their father Lambert Sr. in San Francisco in 1863. It was originally named the Eureka Brush Company.

He moved the broom factory to Norwich St. in the Bernal Heights District in 1910, and it remained there until it burned in the mid 1960's.

He married Josephine who was the book keeper at the factory. The relationship was not in favor with his father, so they eloped.
