Deaths

Died, at the family residence, three miles south of this city, July 17, 1896, Mrs. Mary A., wife of Mr. Leopold Schmidt.

The deceased was a lady who possessed many noble qualities of mind and heart. Quiet and of unassuming manners, kingly in disposition and true to her friends, she was respected and loved by all who had the good fortune to know her. She was born in St. Charles county, Mo., February 7, 1840, and was united in marriage when her bereaved husband October 18, 1856, in the county of her birth. The family moved to this county in October, 1883. The eldest son died and was buried in St. Charles county, in 1884. Eleven children of this happy union survive their best friend, for a mother's love is more valuable than all other treasures of the world. Mrs. Schmidt had suffered greatly for the past five years with heart trouble, and had been informed that she could not hope to recover. She was perfectly resigned to her fate, and died as she had lived, a firm believer in Christianity and sure of eternal life in the world above. Attacked at odd intervals with sudden pains of the heart she was frequently so low that recovery seemed impossible, but she would rally for a time only to underdo the same sufferings again. The last and fatal attach occurred about 1 o'clock last Friday morning, while she was seated in a chair. She complained that she had a strange feeling in her head, and immediately afterwards peacefully passed away.
She was greatly bellowed by all who knew her, and her family have indeed lost a true friend, a good and safe adviser and one whose place can never be filled. Always amiable, of mild and gentle disposition, kind, courteous and thoughtful of the welfare of those around her, she was naturally looked to for advice and her unerring judgement was invaluable to her husband, children and friends. Long will this good lady be remembered by her friends and deep is the grief of the stricken family. All alike have the sincere sympathy of this paper in their bereavement.
