He was married to Caroline Batman July 22, 1860, to this union were born 12 children, 5 sons and seven daughters, of whom 3 sons and 2 daughter are living; James H. and Thomas J. East, with whom he was living, and Peter East. of Terre Haute; Mrs Mary Cox and Mrs Rachel Searcy, of Fargo. Other relatives are James East, of Alton; and two brother-in-laws, David Batman, of Robinson, Ill., and W. H. Merritt, of Davis City, Iowa.
Though a man of Iron will and determination, he was true hearted and high minded, a man whose word was his bond, He was made a Master Mason in Posey Lodge No.188, at Leavenworth in the fall of 1887, but later moved his membership to Alton Lodge.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. M. J. Blackburn, of Wolf Creek. Ky., and the remains laid to rest by the side of his wife in the East cemetery by the Masonic lodge.
