Right after they flew over the Dutch coast they were hit in the area of their #2 engine by ground anti-aircraft fire. Seven parachutes were seen leaving the B-24 before it was also seen to crash in the Netherlands. Two members of the crew were lost in the crash.
Arthur was "Killed In Action" in this crash during the war.
He was awarded the Purple Heart.
Service # 32475422
Son of Arthur Humphreys and Charlotte Boucher Humphreys.
His headstone shows his rank as "Aviation Cadet" however his actual rank at the time was "Staff Sergeant". The reason it shows "Aviation Cadet" is because it notes he was, at that time, going through training to become an "Officer" and possibly a "Pilot" or "Co-Pilot". However all "Aviation Cadets" still had another rank.
