Gerald R. Ackerley "Red," 74, of Andes passed away peacefully with his family by his side, Sunday, April 26, 2009 at Mountainside Residential Care Center,

Margaretville. He was born March 14, 1935 in Margaretville, the son of Raymond and Mildred (Close) Ackerley. He graduated from Andes Central School in 1954 and was a lifetime resident of Andes.

He married Patricia Shields on August 14, 1955 at the Pleasant Valley Church, Andes.

Red worked for New York State Department of Environmental Protection for 32 years, and retired in 1992.

He enjoyed hunting, playing cards, horseshoes, bowling, bird watching, family picnics and vacations. He enjoyed the outdoors.

Red was an honorary member of the Andes Fire Department.

Surviving are three sons, Thomas (JoAnne) Ackerley, Auburn, Steven (Janet) Ackerley, Elizabeth City, N.C., Michael (Robin) Ackerley, Schenectady; a daughter, Debra (Ackerley) Cronk, Grand Gorge; grandchildren, Tricia Ackerley, Christopher Ackerley, Julie Ackerley, Michael David Ackerley, Gregory Ackerley, Katie Cronk, Megan Cronk and Emily Cronk. Also surviving are two sisters, Donna (Richard) Burgin, Delhi, Carol (Paul) Dibble, Bloomville; sister-in-law, Kathy Ackerley, Syracuse and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his wife, Mildred Ackerley; a brother, Larry Ackerley and a sister, Linda Rosa.

A memorial service will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 9 at the United Methodist Church, Andes with Pastor Karen Ogborn and Rev. Gerald Norris officiating.

Burial will be in the Sanford Cemetery, Margaretville where a graveside committal will take place for "Red" and Patricia.

A reception will be held at the Andes Fire Department immediately following the committal.

Donations in memory of Gerald R. Ackerley may be made to The Huntington's Disease Society of America, Andes Fire Department or the Andes Methodist Church.
