Martha Irene Miller, known as Irene, was a daughter of Melvin and Martha Shurtleff Miller. She grew up in Salt Lake City.

After graduating from the LDS Univeristy in Salt Lake City in 1906, Irene soon moved to Lewisville, Idaho to live with her sister and brother-in-law, Effie and Roy Winchester, when she got a teaching job with the local school district.

It was there that Irene met I. S. Crouch, the superintendent of the school district who had just moved from Missouri to Idaho the previous year. The two eventually became engaged within a few months of meeting.

In January of 1907, Irene took a trip to visit her parents in Salt Lake City, along with Effie and Roy. Mr. Crouch came along as well, intending to meet Irene's parents and ask for permission to marry their daughter on the couple's selected date of January 29th.

However, Irene's father told Mr. Crouch that he wasn't comfortable with the marriage quite yet, due to the fact that the couple hadn't known each other very long. He asked them to wait a year, to which Mr. Crouch agreed.

A few nights later, all four were back in Lewisville. On the night of January 9th, Mr. Crouch called the Winchester home, asking if he could come over to see Irene, and permission was granted. He spent the night laughing and chatting with the family and playing with the Winchesters' children. All seemed well, so Effie and Roy eventually retired to their room.

Two hours later, Irene suddenly came to the couple's room, only saying, "He shot me!" before collapsing. Attempts to revive her were unsuccessful. She was twenty-one years old.

Mr. Crouch was found outside the Winchesters' home, having taken his own life.

Irene was returned home to Salt Lake City, where her funeral was attended by hundreds of those who knew and loved her. She was remembered as a talented young woman with wonderful character, and was known as a natural leader.

She was laid to rest in her family's plot in the Elysian Burial Gardens in Millcreek.
