Harriett was the daughter of Archibald Powers and Sarah Handonon (or Sussana Haulman) Powers. She married John Thomas Grindol on 29 Oct 1885 in Decatur, Macon County, Illinois. Shortly after their marriage, John and Hattie left in a covered wagon for northeastern Colorado. Their oldest child, Archibald Garfield Grindol was born November 1886 near Clay Center, Nebraska during their emigration. The family finally settled in Washington County, Colorado near Otis. They were surrounded with prairie, buffalo and friendly Indians and they lived in a covered wagon until a sod hut was built.

A son Angus or Samuel was born in 1889 and a son John Phayo Grindol was born in 1890 and a daughter, Eunice Floe (called Florence) born in 1892. Angus/Samuel died in 1894 and about that time Harriett left John and went to Stanberry, Gentry County, Missouri. John Thomas followed his wife there and another son Paul was born there in 1895. Eventually Harriett and John divorced.

She married next on 4 April 1898, Isaac M. Darnell or Darnall of McFall, Gentry County where she also lived. He preceded her in death. In 1900 she was married but living alone and by 1910 she was widowed. Before she died, she was a resident for 10 years in Plainview Rest Home in Albany, Gentry County.
