Obituary
Daily News of Los Angeles (CA) - Friday, July 7, 2006
A memorial service will be held July 29 for Don L. Dye , president of Pinecrest Schools. Dye died from heart disease complications Saturday at his home in Encino. He was 73.

Dye was president since 1988 of the Sherman Oaks-based, co-educational private school system that was founded in 1951 by his late mother, Edna Mae Dye . Pinecrest Schools operates 11 campuses in Los Angeles and Ventura counties. The schools are accredited through the National Independent Private School Foundation.
Don had a tremendous spirit. He always wanted to learn. We took Spanish and computer classes together. He loved to talk to people, and one of the reasons why he took the Spanish class was because he wanted to be able to communicate with more people,'' said Alan Skobin, longtime friend and a member of the Los Angeles Police Commission. ``He loved his family, his friends and his business. I couldn't have asked for a more true and loyal friend than Don Dye . A big loss.''

Dye was proud to serve for eight years in the El Monte Police Department reserve squad, where he held the rank of captain. He was a Civil War history buff and a renowned movie trivia expert.

``He was very positive, always laughing. I will remember him by his laugh. He was always happy to help you. He made people feel good,'' said businessman Bert Boeckmann, recalling his red-haired friend of more than 30 years. ``I knew he was proud of his business. He was an outstanding businessman. He was a wonderful man. I'm really going to miss him.''

Don Lloyd Dye was born on Aug. 16, 1932, in Macedonia, Iowa. The Dye family moved to North Hollywood in the 1930s. Dye attended elementary and junior high schools in North Hollywood and graduated in 1950 from North Hollywood High School.

He attended Los Angeles Valley College and the University of California, Los Angeles. He served in the U.S. Army during the 1950s.

``For these times, it was refreshing to have a visionary who cared about children,'' said Lisa Glenn, executive director of Pinecrest Schools, who worked with Dye for 27 years. ``His best line was, `Use your own judgment.' Everybody (on staff) felt like their opinion counted.''

Dye is survived by his wife of 49 years, Bobbi; two daughters, Jeri Dye Lynch and Donnelle Dye Juelsson; five grandchildren; and a nephew, Sean Dye . He was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert F. Dye and Philip H. Dye .

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. July 29 at Forest Lawn Memorial-Park Hollywood Hills, 6300 Forest Lawn Drive, Los Angeles.

Trees will be planted on Pinecrest School campuses in his memory. Donations to the tree fund may be payable to Pinecrest Schools for the Don L. Dye Memorial Tree Fund, Pinecrest Schools, 15244 Magnolia Blvd., Sherman Oaks, CA 91403.
