MORRIS, NY - Carl J. Smith, 84, of 34
South Broad St., Morris, died Thursday,
Dec. 18, at Fox Hospital, Oneonta.
He was born Dec. 11, 1896, in Dimock
Hollow, the son of Charles and Alice
Smith. He married Rigmor Jensen-Wyeth
November 1927.
Mr. Smith was a native and lifelong
resident of Morris. A graduate of Morris
High School in 1913, he worked in the
First National Bank of Morris since his
graduation.
He was employed by the bank for 60
years, serving as president for 30 years.
He was Morris village clerk for 40
years. He served on the Morris school
board from 1929 to 1951. During Mr.
Smith's tenure on the board, the school
district became one of the first
centralized districts in the state.
He was a founder of the Kenyon
Library in 1916, serving as a trustee and
treasurer for many years.
Mr. Smith was vestryman of the Zion
Episcopal Church, Morris, for over 20
years. He was trustee and treasurer of
Hillington Cemetery for 25 years.
Department and served as secretary
and treasurer for many years.
He is survived by his wife; four
daughters, Mrs. Bernard (Bitten)
Simon, New York City, Mary-Alice
Smith-Maynes, Albany, Mrs. Phillip
(Ann Louise) Secor, Mount Vernon,
Iowa, Mrs. Robert (Josephine) Howard,
Manchester-by-the-Sea, Mass. ; 11
grandchilren and one great-grandchild.
He was a founder of the Morris Fire
Department and served as secretary and
treasurer for many years.
Funeral services will be 2: 30 p.m.
Saturday, Dec. 20, at the Zion Episcopal
Church, Morris, with the Rev. Richard
Frye, rector of St. James Episcopal
Church, Oneonta, officiating. Burial
will be in Hillington Cemetery, Morris,
at a later date.
There are no calling hours. The family
requests no flowers.

meeting. After their usual routine
business, Carl Smith, Village Clerk
for 45 years, tendered his resignation. The
Board appointed Kenneth
Reese to succeed Mr. Smith as
Clerk for the Village of Morris.
