Smith Bryant, better known as Uncle Darb, died at the home of his son, G J Bryant on Little Indian Creek on Sunday, October 25, 1931. He was more than 85 years old and was born and had spent his entire life in Putnam county. He served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War as a substitute for his brother, A A Bryant, a former Clerk of the Circuit or County Court of this county.
He had been married twice; his first wife was Mahala Fuqua. They were married May 4, 1861; to this union were born 9 children, two of whom died in infancy. He was married after the death of his first wife to Elizabeth Mayberry and to this union 1 child was born. He was preceeded to the grave by his last wife several years ago.
He was a strong champion of the Confederacy, and though the cause went down to defeat, Uncle Darb was still a strong defender of the lost cause.
He is survived by the following children: G J Bryant of Buffalo Valley, Frank Bryant of Bloomington Springs; Jeff, Mrs. Arch Bryant, Mrs. Sid Bryant and Mrs. Jimmie Lewis of Baxter.
Funeral services conducted by the Rev C N Dickens at the Bryant graveyard were attended by numerous relatives and friends.
