HUNDREDS ATTEND FUNERAL SERVICES FOR DR. CRAIN

Nearly 2,000 persons attended funeral services for Dr. J. Dean Crain yesterday at Pendleton Street Baptist Church, and many others were turned away at the street when they could not even get into the hall areas.
Dr. D.M. Rivers, present Pastor, lauded the man who had served the Church 21 years as Pastor. He described Dr. Crain as a giant among men, a prince among Preachers, a builder of Churches and a champion of Christian education.
"Few men have ever made such a monumental contribution", he said. The speaker described Dr. Crain as indefatigable, earnest and wise. "We are not here to lament a defeat but to commemorate a triumph." he said.
State Evangelist James A. Howard told how Dr. Crain taught him to read at the age of 14, signed a note for college expense money and proved to be the best friend he ever had next to his parents. "We came here today to pay tribute to a great life and a great man," he said.
Dean A. E. Tibbs of Furman University, said Dr. Crain was not just a Preacher, not just an extraordinary Preacher, not an institution - but a cause."
"He leaves a memorial in salvaged lives and happy hearts," Dr. Tibbs said, "through the sharing of the good things of life."
It is not possible to fathom the mystery of death or of a great personality, he said.
Two hundred persons were in the honorary escort. The entire front of the Church was covered in flowers.
Dr. Crain died suddenly Monday at the age of 73. Interment was in Springwood cemetery.
