Enlisted for 9 months & 18 days on 7/25/1861 at Cahaba, Dallas County, AL, he was mustered into (Old) Company G, 5th Alabama Infantry, as a Private. [This company subsequently became (New) Company F.]
Present on all Rolls from enlistment until POW 9/14/1862 in Battle of South Mountain, MD.; confined Ft. Delaware, DE (dates not listed); sent from Ft. Delaware 10/2/1862 to Aikens Landing, VA. for exchange; admitted 10/14/1862 into Winder Division 3 Hospital, Richmond, VA.; returned to duty 10/22/1862.
Mortally Wounded In Action (gunshot) 5/3/1863 during Jackson's 2nd Corps flank attack in Battle of Chancellorsville, VA.; admitted into Camp Winder Hospital, Richmond; died there; left $22.50 and sundries.

The 5th Infantry Regiment completed its organization at Montgomery, Alabama, in May, 1861, and proceeded to Virginia. Its companies were from the counties of Barbour, Clarke, Lowndes, Talladega, Dallas, Sumter, Monroe, Greene, and Pickens.
The regiment reported 24 killed, 133 wounded, and 121 missing in Battle of Chancellorsville.
