John Francis Schmeltzer, he was born at St. Ingbert, Saarland, Germany, was the son of John Francis Schmeltzer (1797-1855) and Magdalena Ochs (1797- ?), he married Mary A. Schmeltzer (a cousin), they had 7 children; Elizabeth(1856-1943, she married Nicolas Beagen), Frank (1858-abt 1872), Edward (1863-bef.1900), Anna (1866-1947, she married Walter Heer), Emma (1869-1947, she married John A. Wunderlich), Edith Katherine (1869-1958), she married Francis Clinton Jenness), Kathryn (1877-?, she married Thomas Read).

John was a member of Old Settler's Association, and worked with another man and developed a steam powered grist mill, the first in Minnesota.
