Company F "Rough and Ready Guards" from Buncombe County, N.C., 14th North Carolina Infantry "Last At Appomattox!", Ramseur's Brigade, Rodes' Division, Army of Northern Virginia, C.S.A.

Resided in Buncombe County and was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Buncombe County at age 20, May 3, 1861. Present or accounted for until killed at Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia.
There, "as fine a specimen of physical manhood as there was in the brigade" he struck up "The Bonnie Blue Flag" while stepping ahead, loading, firing, and singing at the same time, when according to I. Clark's (Bennett) "Fourteenth Regiment" in Histories of the Several Regiments and Battalions from North Carolina", he was "shot dead by an awkward soldier in our rear rank."

Don Troiani's print "The Bonnie Blue Flag" features Tisdale Stepp singing "Bonnie Blue Flag" and rallying the regiment during the Mule Shoe at Spotsylvania Courthouse.

The 14th Infantry Regiment, formerly the 4th Volunteers, completed its organization in June, 1861, at Garysburg, North Carolina. Its companies were raised in the counties of Halifax, Onslow, Anson, Cleveland, Wake, Cumberland, Northampton, Stanly, and Davidson.
