His wife was the daughter of Johannes Anton de Greiff of the silk manufacturing company in Krefeld, Hoeninghaus & de Greiff. JH Altgelt founded the Luisenschule, the first academy of higher learning for young women in Germany. He was privy counselor to King Friedrich Wilhelm III. He was the son of Carl Philipp Altgelt, pastor in Krefeld, and Anna Elizabeth Schultheiss.
