Dillon, Jan 30 [1916] A J C Cottingham, president of the Bank of Dillon and one of Dillon's leadiing citizens and most prominent businessmen, died suddenly at his home on east Main street at 6 o'clock this morning. Mr Cottingham was at the bank yesterday attending to his duties as usual. When he retired at his usual hour, he complained of a slight pain in his left side and at 6 o'clock this morning when his sister in law who was visiting at the home, went to his room to awake him, she found him breathing his last. Medical assistance was called but Mr Cottingham had expired before the physicians arrived.
Mr Cottingham was one of Dillon's pioneer settlers. He located here when the town was in its infancy and engaged in the mercantile business until about eight years ago. He retired from the mercantile business and devoted his time to agricultural pursuits. During his residence in Dillon, Mr Cottingham had filled many positions of honor and trust. He served Dillon twice as mayor, was chairman of the board of commissioners of public works and also served as chairman and secretary and treasurer of the board of trustees of the Dillon high school for a number of years. he was also a member of the board of stewards of the Dillon Methodist church and served as a member of the building committee of the new church when it was first erected.
Mr Cottingham was one of the organizers of the Bank of Dillon, one of the strongest financial institutions in the Pee Dee country, and had been a member of the board of directors from the day the bank was organized. In 1900, he was elected president of the bank in which capacity he served for a number of years. When he retired from the active management of the bank he was elected vice president, which position he held continuously until the first of the present year, when he was again elected president.
Mr Cottingham was born near Little Rock in this county in the year 1858. When a young man he entered Poughkeepsie business college, where he completed a business education. Returning home he entered the employ of J W Dillon and Son, one of the oldest mercantile establishments in thsi section, where he held the position of bookkeeper for a number of years. After leaving the employ of J W Dillon and Son he became a traveling salesman which position he held until he entered the mercantile business.
Mr Cottingham was a successful business man and had accumulated a large fortune. One of his greatest pleasures was to lend financial assistance to young people desiring an education. He was liberal in his contributions to the church and charity.
Mr Cottingham is survived by his wife, who was Miss Corrie Boyd of Concord, NC, and the following brothers and sisters: E Cottingham of Ebenezer, A J Cottingham of Maxton, NC, Mrs Simeon Cobb of Rowland, NC, Mrs Flora Cottingham Hasty of Hasty, NC, W A Cottingham of Dillon. He will be buried at 4 o'clock Monday afternoon at Mt Holly Cemetery.
