John Marine married Emma Phidelia Chester, daughter of Solomon and Zeruiah Chester, on January 28, 1868 in Porter County, Indiana. They lived on their 160 acre farm adjacent to his father's farm, four miles south of Valparaiso in Morgan Township. Besides their own son, Asa Adelbert Marine, known as Dell, they raised his niece, Bessie Comer. Emma died February 27, 1900 at the age of fifty-one.

On May 9, 1901 in Porter County, John W. Marine married Fanny L. (Cornell) Jones, the widow of State Jones. By 1910 John, then retired from farming, Fanny, and their two daughters were living on Calumet Street in Valparaiso. Daughter Emily Cornell Marine had been born in 1903, and daughter Martha Louise Marine had been born in 1908 and died in 1911.

When John passed away in 1924, he was buried in the family plot in Maplewood Cemetery beside his first wife and daughter Martha. His will and probate record indicate that he had adopted his son Asa's daughter, Anna Dell Marine. His wife Fanny died in 1941 in Bowling Green, Ohio, in the home of their daughter Emily, and was laid to rest in the Marine family plot In Maplewood Cemetery.
