Ahijah Haynes was born in Sudbury, Massachusetts, on October 16, 1701, the son of James Haynes and Sarah Noyes. He grew to be a young man in Sudbury and married, on January 18, 1726-7, Elizabeth Smith, who was born in Sudbury in 1704, the daughter of Thomas Smith and his wife, Elizabeth. Ahijah and Elizabeth were the parents of eight children, all born in Sudbury.

Ahijah was a Lieutenant in Captain Richardson's Company during the French and Indian Wars, in 1757. There is no record that he held any office in Sudbury. Elizabeth died in Sudbury in 1778. Ahijah died intestate in 1787, most likely in Sudbury, although there is no record of his death there. Neither of their graves has yet to be located.
