Chalmer L. Basham, 79, of 205 Edgefield Road, Bristol, Tenn., died Monday, Dec. 10, 2001, in National Health Care Nursing Home of Johnson City after a 10-year battle with Alzheimer's Disease. He had been a resident there since August 1997.

He was a native of Berkley, W.Va., and a son of the late Rev. J. Lacy and Zetta M. Basham. his wife, Nadine M. Cage Basham, whom he married on March 15, 1947, also preceded him in death.

Mr. Basham was a graduate of Bristol Tennessee High School. He joined the U.S. Marines on March 8, 1943, served in the Pacific area and China and was discharged May 7, 1946.

He was employed by Monroe Calculating Machine Co. of Bristol soon after it opened and remained for over 20 years until it closed. Just prior to leaving Monroe he bought and managed a retail store/gas station in the Holston Valley area of Sullivan County and was self-employed locally in the building/management of a number of other retail/rental businesses thereafter.

Mr. Basham was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church but had been an active participant at the church of The Glad Tidings until his admittance to NHC.

Survivors include two sons, Chalmer L. Basham Jr. of Bristol, Tenn., and John S. Basham of Surrey, England; one daughter, Rita B. Payne of Bristol, Tenn.; two sisters, Ann Thompson and Beulah McCray, both of Bristol, Tenn.; one brother, John Basham of Bristol, Tenn.; two grandsons, Robert A. Payne of Bristol, Tenn., and John D. Basham of Surrey; one granddaughter, Margaret R. Basham of Surrey; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 20th, in the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum in Glenwood Cemetery with the Rev. Stephen L. Playl officiating.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Alzheimer's Association, Northeast Tennessee Chapter, 207 N. Boone St., Suite 1050, Johnson City, TN 37604. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Akard Funeral Home. Akard Funeral Home is serving the family of Mr. Basham.
