Maxine W. Keefe - 1918-2005

Maxine W. Keefe, 87, of Cheyenne died March 29 in Cheyenne.

She was born on Feb. 14, 1918, in Kemmerer to William L. and Jean Jamieson Wood. Her mother died when she was 1 year old, and when her father later remarried, the family moved to Elmira, N.Y. After four years in Elmira, she moved back to Kemmerer where she was raised by her sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth and Sam Ross.

She graduated as valedictorian of Kemmerer High and attended the University of Wyoming on a scholarship. She earned her bachelor's degree from UW and later did graduate work in adult education at the University of Colorado. She moved to Cheyenne and worked as an administrative assistant in the state auditors office.

Mrs. Keefe married Dr. Quinn Keefe on Dec. 1, 1940, and when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy Dental Corps in 1941, she accompanied him to the Bremerton Navy Shipyard. She returned to Cheyenne when he was sent to sea in 1944. Upon his discharge, he resumed his dental practice in Cheyenne.

Maxine was interested in state and national government and managed the Cheyenne office of the late congressman and Senator-elect Keith Thomson for six years. After his death, she taught adult education to students who could not read or write to help them attain their GEDs. Later, she became the administrative secretary for State Superintendent of Public Instruction Harry Roberts and hiss successor, Dr. Robert G. Schrader. Upon Schrader's retirement, she worked in the Legislature for Sen. Deimer True.

Maxine was a Girl Scout leader, a 20-year-plus member of the Wheels, a member of the Old Dance Group and the Cheyenne Symphony. She also was a 50-year-plus member of Chapter Z PEO and Alpha Chi Omega. She held office in the Laramie County Republican Women's Organization and served as a precinct committee woman. She was a member of the United Center Ladies Auxiliary, First Baptist Church and Monday Morning Bible Study and Prayer Support Group.

She enjoyed reading, bridge and golf until her eyesight failed.

She is survived by her daughter, Kathleen Keefe Scott; and her husband John of Laramie; and two sons, Tim and Tom and his wife Kay of Cheyenne.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1986; her parents; and her sister and brother-in-law.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. today at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Brian High officiating. Cremation has taken place at Schrader's Sunset Park Crematory.
