Joan Murray Altenburg, age 81, passed away on September, 18th at St Clare's Hospital in Weston. She was born in Quincy, Mass. on August 13, 1931, to Robert and Thelma (nee Murray) Hansen. On June 20, 1953, she married John Jay (Jack) Altenburg at the Wauwatosa Congregational Church, Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. Her husband preceded her in death on October 22, 1981.

Even though Joan only lived on the East coast for the first 13 years of her life she always considered herself a "New Englander". One of her favorite childhood memories was going clamming and lobster 'fishing' with her father. She also had crystal clear memories of living through the great Yankee Clipper Hurricane of 1938 which claimed nearly 800 lives and devastated most of the homes in her neighborhood. Joan possessed many artistic talents: a beautiful singing voice, playing piano with perfect recall ability and she had a developed eye for interior decorating, fine art crafting and floral arranging. Joan was always decades ahead of current trends in party planning and entertaining, and she was well known for her impeccable sense of fashion and vast shoe collection.

She was a graduate of Wauwatosa High School; attended the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and graduated from Lake Forest College. She held a Bachelor of Arts degree with a double major in Speech and English and a minor in General Science. For several years she worked as a receptionist for her husband's investment firm, Altenburg and Gooding, and in later years was a senior aide for Marathon County working primarily at the County Courthouse.

Joan held several affiliations throughout her life including Alpha Phi Sorority, Eastern Star, and the American Association of University Women, along with work on various church committees at St. John's Lutheran Church.

Joan is survived by her daughter, Lynn (Terry Riska), and son, John Altenburgh, both of Mosinee. She is further survived by her grandchildren, Garret and Ellen Altenburgh; her sister, Sonja (Dr. Robert) Rickert , Short Hills, New Jersey, and her aunt, Clara Hansen, Manitowoc. She is also survived by three nieces, six grandnieces and nephews and many cousins.

Burial will be in the Mosinee cemetery, Mosinee.
