He passed away at a private assisted living home in Harrisonburg.
He was born in Simoda on April 29, 1930, the son of the late Solon and Mary (Kile) Nelson.
On Aug. 19, 1951, Burrel married Betty (Flynn) Nelson, who survives in Dayton.
Mr. Nelson attended Valley Chapel Church, and after moving to Virginia, he attended Mt. Clinton United Methodist Church.
He attended North Fork Schools and Simoda one room schools.
He worked for 31 years for the DNR.
He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army, serving two years in Japan during the Korean war.
Burrel enjoyed his job, loved going to church, and liked being outdoors working on the farm.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Nelson is survived by a son, Terry Nelson, and wife, Barbara, of Valley Bend; three brothers, Bruce A. Nelson, of Harrisonburg, Va, Troy Nelson of Covington, Va., Charles "Sammy" Nelson, and wife, Lilo, of University Place, Wash.; and a granddaughter, Amber Nelson, of Parkersburg.
In addition to his parents, Burrell was preceded in death by: six brothers, Earl, Granville, Clifton, Abraham, Robbie and Mason Nelson; and a half brother, Mason Bennett.
Mr. Nelson's family will receive friends on Friday, Sept. 21, 2012, from 6-8 p.m. at the Basagic Funeral Home, Franklin.
Rev. James Joyner will officiate funeral services on Saturday, Sept. 22, 2012 at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel.
Interment will be at North Fork Memorial Cemetery, Riverton, with military graveside services conducted by the Pendleton County Veterans Honor Guard.
