Son of Ephrahim S. and Margaret Ann (Chapin) Fletcher.

At the time of his enlistment in the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, James was living at Northbridge. Massachusetts, and gave his occupation as clerk.

On 12 Jul 1861 he mustered into service with Company H, of the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry as a Corporal, being credited to the quota of Northbridge, Massachusetts.

James and George F. Fletcher, and Samuel J. Fletcher, brothers, served together in the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry in Company H.

James died unmarried on 17 Sep 1862 at The Battle of Antietam, killed in action.

His body was returned home and buried together with his brother, George F. Fletcher.

On 17 Sep 1900 James B. Fletcher was included on the 15th Massachusetts Civil War memorial at Antietam Battlefield, Sharpsburg, Maryland, on the 35th anniversary of the battle.
