Ruth Linda Granat
May 19, 1942 - October 2, 2009

Ruth Linda Granat of Palisade, beloved daughter, sister, aunt and friend, passed away on October 2, 2009 at the Hospice Care Center after a courageous nine month battle with cancer. She was 67. Ruth and her twin brother, Roger were born on May 19th, 1942 in Grand Junction, Colorado to Violet (Vi) and Lyndon (Lindy) Granat. Ruth attended grade and high schools in Palisade, graduating in 1960. She continued her education at Mesa Junior College and Western State College, graduating with a degree in Physical Education and Business. She taught high school level Physical Education, Business, and Computer Science classes for 32 years, briefly at Los Alamos, NM, then at Montrose High School and Grand Junction High School and finished her teaching career at Central High School. Ruth loved to travel. As a child, she, her brothers, and her parents took back country excursions throughout western Colorado and eastern Utah. In the 1980's she twice traveled to Hawaii with the Eastern Star and to Alaska with Vi and Lindy. On the Alaskan trips, the three of them enjoyed fishing for salmon and halibut and exploring the scenic wilds of that state. After her retirement, she joined Vi and Lindy in wintering in Quartzsite, AZ where she delighted in organizing "Ruth Tours" of western and central Arizona. Her penchant for organizing "Ruth Tours" continued locally until her health failed. Ruth was an active member of Palisade Chapter #90, Order of the Eastern Star, for more than 48 active years. She served several times as Worthy Matron of the Chapter and participated as an officer of the Grand Chapter of Colorado. She loved the fellowship of the order and was a tireless worker to advance its charitable goals. She is survived by her mother, Violet; twin brother, Roger (Marie); brother, Gary, and cousin, Jeanette Beck. In addition, she is survived by nieces, Robin Finkel (Dick) and Shawnie Roberts; nephew, Alan Granat (Carolyn); aunt, Lois Tufly; great-niece, Jessica Dutton; great-nephew, Christopher Dutton; great-great-nephew, Ryley Dutton; and numerous other cousins. She was preceded in death by her father, Lyndon; her maternal grandparents, Norville and Lelia Wolverton; uncles Norville and Ted Wolverton, and aunts, Winnie Lowes and Barbara Edling. A memorial service will be held at the Palisade Methodist Church at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 7. Memorial contributions can be made to Palisade Chapter #90, the American Cancer Society, or Hospice of the Grand Valley. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Snell-McLean Funeral Home of Palisade. Special thanks and appreciation to the loving souls at Hospice, at St. Mary's Hospital, the Oncology Clinic, and Family Health West for outstanding care, comfort, and support they provided to her and her family throughout her illness.
