Jonathan M. Jones (1817-1894)... photo taken in Keene, NH

Jonathan Jones married on 28 Dec 1880, Lancaster, MA to Amelia B. Schumacher of Clinton, MA.

Jonathan Jones of Keene, NH was born 26 Aug 1817, Berlin, MA, son of William & Sally (Meriam/Merriam) Jones (both his parents were born in Berlin also). Amelia was 40 years old when she married Jonathan. It was her first marriage and her parents were listed as: “Hermon & Ellen.” Jonathan was a 63 year old stonecutter and this was his second marriage.

He had at least two children by his first marriage.

In the 1880 US Federal Census for Keene, NH, Jonathan had two occupants in his household at Forest St.: Clara S. Jones, his daughter, and Sarah Whitcomb, his “mother.” Jonathan was 62 years old and a Massachusetts born “mason.” Clara was 18 years old and employed as a “milliner.” Clara had been born in NH, her father in MA and her mother in NH. Sarah Whitcomb, likely Jonathan’s mother-in-law and not his biological mother, was a widow, “housekeeper,” 81 years old, white and born in NH, as were both her parents.

Amelia was mentioned by her mother Ellen in her step-brother William Schumacher’s US military pension records (stating Amelia was 23 years old in 1864).

Several photographs in her younger half-sister Emily (Schumacher) Newton, Walker’s photo album were identified as being Amelia Jones, one was taken in Clinton, MA and the other in Keene, NH. And one of the photos in Emily’s album was identified as Mr. Jones (a cabinet card sized photo taken at a Keene, NH studio and opposite page from the one of “Mrs. Jones.”). This is the photo shown here.
