My great grandfather was born in Fauquier, Virginia before the Civil War from a notable plantation family. He grew up with his father as a slave owner and believed state's rights preserved his right to hold slaves. John Newman returned to Virginia from his home in Missouri to fight for the Confederacy as a Lieutenant for the 9th Cavalry, Company A. As immoral as his stand for slavery, John Newman died as an American in San Francisco after the great earthquake.
