Sol was one of the finest illuminating artists of his time. He studied Medieval art where illuminated books were often found among the libraries of the gentry and not accessible to the commoners.

Sol was a talented violinist and was asked (at a very young age) to solo with the Boston Symphony.

As a young man he performed with his sister (Nellie-pianist) and brother (Julius-cellist) as THE NODEL TRIO.

He was married to Shulamith Gold, the daughter of Rabbi Wolf Gold, a signer of the Israeli constitution. Rabbi Gold officiated at the wedding of Sol and Shulamith.
