Mary Elizabeth Kite, age 86, a lifelong Elkton resident and recent resident of the Sunnyside Retirement Community, passed away on September 19, 2012. She was born to the late William Edgar and Mary Louise Stratton Kite on March 25, 1926.
Mary Elizabeth graduated from Elkton High School, Mary Washington College and Eastern Mennonite College. She worked in the lab at Merck and then taught 6th grade at Waterman Elementary School in Harrisonburg for two years before teaching 5th grade at Elkton Elementary School for a number of years. She kept pictures of each and every student she taught during those years and loved giving student tours of her Civil War museum located in her home. Mary Elizabeth was a dedicated member of the Elkton United Methodist Church where she sang in the church choir, taught Sunday school and, as a member of the United Methodist Women, gave numerous informative programs. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution , United Daughters of the Confederacy, Eastern Star #3 and a Charter member of the Elkton Historical Society. She loved traveling overseas with her friends after retirement. She is survived by numerous cousins and dear friends.
Miss Kite and her immediate family were very fond of and devoted to the Town of Elkton and its residents. She was always willing to help the town and its residents in any way she was able. She and her uncle, J. Hiram Kite, donated what became known as the Miller-Kite House Museum to the Town of Elkton, which has since been restored and now houses the Elkton Historical Society. She also donated numerous Civil War artifacts and fixtures to the Society.
A celebration of her life will be conducted on Tuesday, September 25, 2012, 11 AM at the Elkton United Methodist Church with Rev. David T. Reynolds officiating. Interment will be private at Elk Run Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the Kyger Funeral Home, Elkton, VA. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.kygers.com.
