Former Richfield Resident
Dies in Iowa City Friday
RICHFIELD-The funeral service for John Pleggenkuhle was conducted by Rev. Kraemer at Hawkeye Lutheran church and the body was brought to Hawkeye cemetery. His pall bearers were Lloyd and Walter Pleggenkuhle, Woodrow and Dean Tessmer, Alfred and Noel Ott. Those from away attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Pleggenkuhle, and Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Hochberger from Frederika.

John Pleggenkuhle was born on Oct. 20, 1875 in Bethel Township, Fayette County, the son of Fred Pleggenkuhle and his wife Angeline.

Shortly after his birth he was received as a child of God through holy baptism, and at the age of 14, after due instruction, he was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at the Richfield church.

He worked on various farms for a number of years until in 1901 he engaged in farming for himself on a farm near Richfield. On Feb. 25, 1903, he was united in marriage to Anna Mary Toenges. No children blessed this union, but since Mr. and Mrs. Pleggenkuhle were both very fond of children, they adopted a daughter, Marguerite. Mr. and Mrs. Pleggenkuhle farmed until 1918 when they retired and moved to Hawkeye. Mrs. Pleggenkuhle preceded her husband in death on Oct. 1, 1933.

On Jan. 21, 1936, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Flossie Martin.

Mr. Pleggenkuhle enjoyed good health most of his life until a few months ago when illness struck him low. He spent some time in the hospital at Iowa City where he also underwent an operation. For a time it seemed as though he were improving, but during the last few weeks he failed rapidly, until on March 13, he peaceably fell asleep. He had reached the age of 60 years, 4 months and 17 days.

Besides his adopted daughter, Marguerite, he leaves to mourn his early departure, his wife; five brothers: Henry, Charles, William, and August, all of the Hawkeye, Richfield and Sumner vicinity, and Fred of Pine River, Minn.; six sisters: Mrs. Sophie Korupp, Saulkton, S.D., Mrs. Minnie Fedeler, Mrs. Nettie Rueber, Mrs. Lizzie Winter, Mrs. Alvina Ott, Mrs. Lena Tessmer, all of this vicinity. Also a step-daughter, Miss Elma Martin. His parents and a sister, Anna, preceded him in death.
