Prisoner of war during World War II

Vaughn Emerson Weir, 78, of Bentleyville, died Tuesday, June 22, 2004, in his home.

He was born January 9, 1926, in Bentleyville, a son of O. Keith and Irene Hinebaugh Weir.

Mr. Weir attended Somerset Elementary School and was a 1945 graduate of Bentleyville High School.

Mr. Weir was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army Air Forces 454th Bomb Group near Cerignola, Italy.

On his first and only mission, his plane was shot down over the St. Valentin works in Austria. He was captured by the Germans and spent eight weeks as a prisoner of war in Mooseburg, Germany, Stalag VII A.

He was an employee of Equitable Gas Co. for 35 years, working as a gas measurement field man.

Mr. Weir had been a member of Bentleyville United Methodist Church for 63 years, serving as a trustee for 27 years, first as secretary and then as president for 20 years, overseeing many improvements to the church.

In the last several years, he and his wife were active in Belle Vernon United Methodist Church and First Presbyterian Church of Bentleyville.

He was a member of American Legion Post 165 in Bentleyville and was involved with the former Bentworth Civic Organization. He and his wife maintained the flowers and flags along Main Street in Bentleyville for 22 years.

Mr. Weir also was a member of Bentleyville Lions Club, where he filled offices on the local and district level. In 1996, he was named a Melvin Jones Fellow, the Lions Club's highest recognition for service to humanity. He also received the Pennsylvania Counselors Distinguished Service Award in 2001.

On June 18, 1946, he married Mildred Marsteller, who survives.
