Army Master Sgt. Payne was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 70th Armor Regiment, Ft. Riley, Kansas as an intelligence noncommissioned officer. Payne was killed in Haswah while examining unexploded ordnance when the ordnance exploded. William joined the Army shortly after graduating from Otsego High School in 1975. While in high school, he wrestled and played football all four years. After serving an initial hitch, he left the Army and returned to the Kalamazoo area for 18 months or two years before re-enlisting and becoming a career soldier. William had planned to retire soon, but feeling a duty to the men who served under him, he delayed his retirement because of the war. He is survived by his wife, Karin, and two sons.
