TIFFIN — The Rev. Thomas W. Ankenbrandt, 74, a Roman Catholic priest who served several churches in northwest Ohio for four decades, died of prostate cancer Monday, November 1, 2004, in St. Francis Home.

Father Ankenbrandt was a dedicated and committed man who had a good rapport with people, said the Rev. James Say, pastor of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Tiffin.

Father Ankenbrandt was associate pastor of St. Joseph for three years before he retired in 1996.

"He was a real fine priest," Father Say said.

Father Ankenbrandt worked with the parish council, and was in charge of the ministry to the sick and shut-ins. He took Communion to people even after he retired, Father Say said.

Father Ankenbrandt was ordained May 26, 1956.

He was associate pastor at St. Mary in Sandusky, St. Joseph in Fremont, St. Francis De Sales in Toledo, St. Charles in Toledo, Holy Spirit Seminary in Toledo, St. Mary in Norwalk, St. Alphonse in Peru, Ohio, and St. Joseph in Tiffin.

He was pastor at St. Joseph in Crestline, St. Mary in Edgerton, and St. Joseph in Monroeville, all in Ohio.

Father Ankenbrandt, who was born in Toledo on January 6, 1930, lived in East Toledo until he graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1948 and went to seminary.

He attended St. Meinrad Seminary in Indiana and Mount St. Mary Theological School in Cincinnati.

He moved into St. Francis Home, Tiffin, 1½ years prior to his death, and said Mass for the residents, his sister, Blanche Hager, said.

Father Ankenbrandt liked gardening and doing jigsaw puzzles. He also painted and enjoyed going to art museums.

He also played cards, especially bridge, and vacationed at a lake every summer with his former seminary classmates, his sister said. Surviving are his sisters, Blanche Hager and Helen Bouya.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m., Thursday, November 4, 2004, at St. Mary Catholic Church, with the Most Reverend Robert W. Donnelly, Auxiliary Bishop of the Toledo Diocese, officiating. Interment was in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation was held from 1-3 p.m., Wednesday, November 3, 2004, at St. Francis Home Chapel. The body was then moved to St. Mary Catholic Church, where visitation continued from 4-8 p.m.

Arrangements were under the direction of Hannay-Traunero Funeral Home.
