Melvin was born in Hassan Valley on the family homestead to parents M/M John Lambke. With his family, he moved to the town of Hutchinson in 1930. He went to Hutchinson schools.

He was a member of Co B of Hutchinson's National Guard Unit. Once called to active duty, Melvin became part of Co. F of the 133rd Inf. Sadly, he was killed in action in Italy.

The article stated the surviving family member in addition to his parents,
"...three brothers and sisters. They are Henry and Alfred...and Harry... His sisters are Mrs. emmet Faacks (Grace) and Mrs. Dan Utton (Ellen)...; Mrs Eldor Dallman (Hildegarde)...; and Mrs Maurice Beach (Ruth)..."
