George G. Snyder and his first wife, Sarah Hatch, were among the earliest pioneers in the Utah territory, arriving in 1849. They continued on to Sacramento, California where they stayed for four years, establishing boarding houses for the forty-niners mining for gold. Upon their return to Utah, George was a prominent rancher, farmer, horseman, freighter, mill owner and businessman in many parts of Utah. The last 20 years of his life, he was an important figure in Summit County, where he and his 6th wife, Rhoda were the first family to build a home in Park City, giving the mining town it's name. George Snyder was a Judge in Summit county and for many years was an active, well known leader both in civic and religious capacity. He is buried with his third wife, Caroline, and two of their daughters in the cemetery that was originally part of his holdings and which he gave to the city after his baby daughter, Pearl, was buried this hillside in the winter of 1879.
