US MARINE CORPS WORLD WAR II

John Francis Peterson enlisted in the Marine Corps 6 September, 1942 from Keokuk, Iowa. Completed recruit training at the Recruit Depot, MCB San Diego, CA. During November, 1942 assigned to the 2nd Guard Company, Marine Barracks, Mare Island CA.

7-21 July, 1943 on furlough. 22 July, 1943 assigned to A Company, Infantry Battalion, MCB Camp Elliott, CA. During October 1943 assigned to L Company, 3rd Battalion, 24th Marines, 4th Marine Division, MCB Camp Pendleton, CA.

13 January, 1944 embarked USS Wayne (APA-54) at San Diego for movement overseas. 21 January, 1944 at Lahaina Roads, Maui. 1-4 February, 1944 participated in combat operations Namur, Marshall Islands. 22 February, 1944 arrived at Kahului, Maui based at Camp Maui. 20 April, 1944 promoted to Private First Class.

12 May, 1944 embarked USS Fuller (APA-7) for landing rehearsals. 20-29 May, 1944 in Pearl Harbor. 8-11 June, 1944 at Eniwetok, Marshalls. Killed in Action 14 June, 1944.

Next of Kin: Parents, Mr Ross A and Mrs Frances L Peterson, 2800 Plank Road, Keokuk, Iowa.

Originally buried in the 4th Marine Division Cemetery on Saipan.

1948 returned to the US for permanent burial in Keokuk, Iowa.
