NORFOLK – Funeral service for George L. Vowell Sr., 94, of Norfolk will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, January 11, 2024 at Stonacek Funeral Chapel in Norfolk with Rev. Terry Buol officiating. Interment will take place at Prospect Hill Cemetery in Norfolk. Visitation will be held an hour prior to service time on Thursday. Family asks that Memorials can be sent to the Norfolk Veterans Home. George died on Sunday, January 7, 2024 at the Norfolk Veterans Home. Stonacek Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.


George was born on May 24, 1929 in Farmville, Virginia to Frank and Goldie (Powell) Vowell. He attended grade school and high school in Farmville, VA, and went into the military before graduating. George served in the United States Navy from August 6, 1946 to August 30, 1950. During his time in the Navy George was an aircraft mechanic/gunner and served in the Korean War. After returning from the military George took on a job with Boeing working on aircrafts.


George married Gale Ferris on October 14, 1955 in Chesterfield, S.C., Gale died May 9, 2007. The couple lived in Virginia and then in Kansas before moving to Norfolk in 1960. George owned and operated his own truck and was awarded as driver of the year for King Van Lines. After moving to Norfolk George hauled for Andrew's Van Lines. After Andrew's George drove for United Van Lines for 30 plus years. George hauled his last load at 80 years old after making a trip to Florida. George loved hunting, fishing, and building motors for people to put in their hot rods.


Survivors include children George (Rhonda Wolfe) Vowell Jr. of Norfolk, Glen (Diane) Vowell of Panora, IA, Pam Sapp of Hallsville, MO., Cindy (Bill) Hoff of Norfolk, Michelle (Shane Trapp) Vowell of Lindsay, Rhonda Vowell of Omaha, and Stacie (Doug) Huttmann of Stanton, 10 grandchildren,13 great-grandchildren, and sister Marilyn Rock of Newcastle, VA. George was preceded in death by his wife Gale, parents Frank and Goldie, and three siblings.


Casket bearers will be George Vowell Jr., Glen Vowell, Bill Hoff, Matthew Vowell, Shane Trapp, Brock Keith, and Cooper Vowell. Condolences may be expressed to the family on-line at www.stonacekfuneralchapel.com.
