AKA Thomas Burnes. Private, Sergeant & 1st Sergeant, Battery L, 5th US Artillery 7 Sep 1861 to 6 Nov 1863; 2nd Lieutenant, 5th US Artillery 31 Oct 1863; transferred to 2nd US Artillery 13 Sep 1864; died 28 Oct 1864 of wounds received 27 Oct 1864 at the battle of Hatcher's Run VA.

He is listed on the Civil War Battle Monument at West Point.

A battery at Fort Totten Military Reservation in New York was named after him.

Married to Lizzie (Corns) Burns, daughter of Jacob and Martha Corns, who are also buried at this site (graves unmarked).
