Sue was born August 16, 1933 in a log cabin in the Dyllis Community of Roane County. She grew up playing on a fast pitch softball team, whose record was 300-0 when she left. She played basketball on a championship team at Oliver Springs High School with teammates, Barbara Lockette, Dorothy Hall & Myrtle Chapman, to name only a few. They have all remained friends to this day. Sue was named all tourney, being very proud of this honor. She was a sharp shooter, and rode her brother's Harley Davidson motorcycle. She aspired to be a dirt track racer.

She married her sweetheart, the late J. B. Adkins, on August 25, 1950.

Sue worked at Norwood Elementary School, Roane Hosiery Mill, and Walgreens in Oak Ridge as a beauty consultant.

She loved life, the Lord, and people. Her flowers were her passion.

Sue was preceded in death by her parents, Bill & Cecil Hammons, sisters-in-law, Geneva Hammons & Faye Hammons. Brother Glen Hammons, Nephew Jeff Hammons and her husband of 59 years, John B. Adkins.

Survived by: Son, Gary and wife Judy Adkins, Grandson John "Duke" Adkins all of Oak Ridge. By brothers: Roy C. Hammons of Harriman, and Don Hammons of Clinton. By a cousin: Ella Sue Carter and husband, Clancey of Nashville, And by a host of wonderful nieces and nephews. She is also survived by, very special friends Barbara Lockette, Dorothy Hall, and Linda Coker. My apologies to any that may not be listed.

The family will receive friends, Wednesday, September 19, 2012, between the hours of 5:00 and 7:00 pm at Sharp Funeral Home. The funeral will follow at 7:00 pm in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Barry Ariaz officiating. Burial and graveside services will be held, Thursday, September 20, 2012 at 11:00 am, at the Dyllis Cemetery. Sharp Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
