Enlisted for 12 months' service on 5/10/1861 in Goochland County, VA., he was Commissioned on 6/2/1861 as Captain, Harrison's Company, 4th Virginia Cavalry. (This company subsequently became Company F, 4th Virginia Calvary.)
Resigned commission 8/31/1861. Commanding officer recommended him for any capacity where his talents might be best put to further use.
Enlisted (date not known; but after early 1864), he was mustered into Company (not listed), Mosby's 43rd Battalion Virginia Partisan Cavalry.

Mosby's Cavalry Regiment, formerly the 43rd Battalion, was organized in December, 1864. The battalion was formed in June, 1863, with five companies, later increased to eight.
