---Fairy Marguerite (Gauss) Zerbel, age 92, formerly of Marshall, Michigan died Monday, September 10, 2012, in Roscommon, Michigan, following a ten year battle with Alzheimer's Disease. She was born on November 15, 1919 in Marshall, Michigan, to Frank and Adeline (Booth) Gauss and was the youngest of three children.
---In 1938 Fairy graduated from Marshall High School. She was active in the Glee Club, G.A.A., Commercial Club, student council, Campfire Girls, operetta, basketball, soccer, and baseball. Graduating from Mercy College of Nursing in 1941, she returned to Marshall where she was employed as a Registered Nurse at Leila Hospital in Battle Creek. She is most remembered in her position as Director Of Nurses at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall.
---She married Lohrman Zerbel in the First Presbyterian Church in 1942, just prior to him going overseas during WWII. Fairy was a former member of the Saddle Club, VFW, American Legion, bridge clubs and the First Presbyterian Church, where she held various offices, in addition to teaching Sunday School and singing in the choir. She also enjoyed playing the piano and organ. Many will remember her duets on the piano with her sister, Thelma.
---In 1955 Fairy left her nursing career to join her husband in his insurance business, Zerbel Insurance Agency. In 1964 they sold the agency due to Lohrman's failing health. They later moved to Houghton Lake where she would once again return to her nursing career, this time at the hospital in Grayling, Michigan, while caring for the love of her life, her husband.
---They wintered in Florida and Texas until Lohrman's death in 1977. During this period, she sold the Houghton Lake house and lived for several years in Bay City, Michigan, where her grandchildren often visited. In the 1980's, she returned to her beloved hometown of Marshall. As her health declined, she eventually moved to Utah and later to Escanaba area to be near her children.
---Always on the go, she enjoyed any outdoor activity, especially walking with her dog, growing the flowers in her garden and hunting for shells on the Fort Myers beach with her visiting children and grandchildren. She and Lohrman spent many hours together fishing, golfing and boating. She used to laugh about always celebrating her birthday sitting in the woods on opening day of deer hunting. The only year she didn't accompany him, was the year he got his buck! She played golf into the 1990's, rode snowmobiles and at age 88 even went canoeing and kayaking. All of her grandchildren learned to love playing cards with Grandma Fairy.
---Fairy is fondly remembered for all the years she gave of herself to her family, friends and community. She was a fighter for what she believed was right. Her grace and dignity, strength of character and perseverance through life's trials served as an example for her family to follow. She was blessed with a peaceful passing with her son holding her hand as she reached out to take Jesus' hand to escort her into Heaven and to be reunited with loved ones who preceded her.
---She is survived by her daughter Patricia (George) Clayborn of Blanding, UT; her son Thomas (Chris) Zerbel of Escanaba, MI; four granddaughters Amy (Shane) (Clayborn) Spencer of Illinois, Nicole (Johnny) (Zerbel) Ivers of Georgia, Christina (Kyle) (Zerbel) Brawt of Michigan, and Lindsay Zerbel of Australia; and six great-grandchildren, Colt and Shelby Spencer, Abby and Ella Ivers, Taylor and Tanner Brawt.
---She was preceded in death by her husband Lohrman, her sister Thelma (Gauss) Kelser, her brother Homer Gauss, her grandson George Clayborn, her great-granddaughter Jessica Spencer, and her beloved pets, Sammy, Bennie, Pooh Bear and Cassie.
