Enlisted as a private on 10 February 1864 at Dublin, Virginia in Company D, 5th Virginia Cavalry. He was taken prisoner 11 May 1864 at Yellow Tavern, Virginia, and transferred to Fort Monroe and from there to Point Lookout POW camp in MD where he died of disease 22 August 1864 at the age of 33. His body was moved from Point Lookout Confederate Cemetery to the Shaver-Dyrele Cemetery.
